Idol worship
They are here again in the media. "What is here again?" I can almost hear some people say. The Elections? Nope. Just finished. Then what else is there? Does not surprise the thinking of some people as far as our local Caldecott Media Folks are concerned, given the dearth of originality from them. Give up? OK, I'll tell you. Singapore Idol.
If it was not bad enough to have four pretentious judges, one of them droped out only to be replaced by another one. One would be forgiven by thinking that one of the judge of last year's ear-torturing event left because he was terrified of facing more people who cannot sing. (There was a Kit-Kat advertisement once about a bad that could not play, could not sing and looked awful but that is a different story altogether) It seems that someone else has taken his place. I do not know why they need four judges just to judge a singing competion cum reality show that would not had surfaced had the American version of it had seemed so popular. I think the average man in the street can tell you the exact same words uttered in that Kit-Kat advertisement when it comes to Singapore Idol. And what does the winner of this faux-Talentime get after he or she wins. Let's see, promoting 7-Eleven, releasing a CD of cover versions (that do a horrible disservice to the original singers that sang them) and just getting humiliated till they reach the finals. They might as well start a competition at one end of Orchard Road with contestants each wearing a big sign pasted on their back saying "Kick Me" and count how many times he gets kicked till he reaches the end of Orchard Road. The one with the most kicks wins.
Honestly. Singaporeans, by and large, are lemmings.
